Pentair Aquaponics Technology Highlighted

Pentair Aquatic Eco-Systems (PAES) has an aquaponics display at the Disney Epcot Flower & Garden Festival, which runs from March 4 until May 17. Besides topiary and fantastic flower Disney characters, the festival also features outdoor kitchens for guests to sample fresh, seasonal foods and beverages. This is Pentair’s second year at this festival, representing a new way to think about farming and the future of sustainability.

Pentair’s 10'x15' system display features a fresh, sustainable take on the innovative aquaponics process, showcasing “farming reimagined.” All main components*, with the exception of the exterior wood and steel structure, are available from Pentair:

  • The 200 gallon fiberglass tank with a transparent window provides a perfect view of the tilapia while the water flows into a swirl separator, then into a static up flow filter for solids removal.
  • One raft system growing leafy greens (shown below) which is about 120 gallons (8'x2'x1').
  • Additional greens and flowers sit end-to-end in two wicking beds, tying together the colorful experience of the festival.
  • A few vine crops (beans, tomatoes) growing in Autopot technology.

Adjacent to Pentair’s display, visitors can actually eat the produce being grown, which was featured on the food web site Edible Orlando(http://www.edibleorlando.com/urban-farms-and-farm-fresh-fare-at-the-epcot-flower-garden-festival/) here is an excerpt:

The all-natural menu at Urban Farm Eats (between Refreshment Port and World Showcase Promenade) features produce grown using a sustainable aquaponics system from Pentair Aquatic Eco-Systems, and their adjacent display showcases their vision of farming re-imagined. Guests can receive a guided tour of their innovative systems from a Pentair specialist, and learn more about how the aquaponics process can be part of a sustainable future.

If you are wondering, "What is Aquaponics?” - it is the combined culture of fish and hydroponic vegetable crops in a recirculating system. In Aquaponics, fish provide the nutrients that plants need to grow, and the plants act as a filter to improve the water quality for the fish. The PAES specialists are present daily to offer more information and a guided explanation of our system.

*All main components are available from Pentair: Fiberglass tanks, auto pots, filtration equipment, aeration equipment, and plumbing fittings.
